The original building, a two storey dilapidated cottage, was extensively rebuilt and extended to form a contemporary 3 bedroom house with the main living areas on the first floor taking advantage of the amazing 360 degree views to the Lake District, Northern Pennines and the Howgills.

Working closely with the developer Story Homes, Unwin Jones developed the detailed designs for the conversion of this Grade 2* listed cotton mill. The practice was involved in a lengthy but constructive consultation process with English Heritage and the City Council. The end result is a building that has retained its industrial character with very little change to the historic fabric. There is an exciting contrast between the existing building and the modern, contemporary apartments and external additions. The apartments have won a number of Housing and Architectural awards including a Civic Trust Mention.

This was a new build turn-key project to create a stunning 4 bedroom split level house. The house features an open plan living/dining/kitchen space with panoramic slide-aside windows opening to a terrace with spectacular views to Skiddaw.

This stunning new build house comprises two distinct elements separated by dramatic stone wall that references Hadrian’s Wall, the line of which is a few fields to the North. One element is reminiscent of a farmhouse and provides more traditional living spaces. The other is a double height space that houses the kitchen, dining and living space in a bold contemporary glazed, curved wing that maximises the spectacular views over the Solway Firth and the sunsets in the west.

UJP prepared the masterplan and detailed designs for this 98 unit residential development just outside the city centre in Carlisle. The practice developed an efficient, high quality layout with a mixture of apartments, semis and townhouses on this former industrial site which sits adjacent to the flood plain of the River Petteril.

IHA approached UJP following the refusal of planning consent (and an appeal) for a development of 38 extra care units in Brampton. UJP took a completely fresh look at the development and produced an innovative scheme; engaged with the community, planning team and supporting bodies within the Adult Care team of Cumbria County Council. After a formalised public consultation a planning application was submitted and approved. The scheme of £4m was completed in September 2016.

UJP is now developing further projects for IHA in Carlisle, Penrith, Kendal and Workington.
